I came back from the store and started to make dinner and forgot to buy the packet of fajita seasoning! It was too late to start something else, because I already started cooking the chicken and peppers.
So, I did a google search, got some ideas and went from there.
Jenn’s Fajita Seasoning Mix
2 TB. chili powder
1/2 TB. salt
1 TB. paprika
1 TB. sugar
2 tsp. chicken boullion (crushed cubes or powder from a jar)
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp. (or more!) or crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp. ground cumin
Mix together in a bowl.
Heat 1 1/b pounds of boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into cubes into a big skillet. About half way through cooking, add 3 TB. of the fajita marinade and 1/2 cup of water.
I cook the peppers in a separate skillet, because some of my kids don’t like that combo. I used the Trader Joe’s tri-peppers that come frozen. So easy!
The result? So good! I will NEVER buy store-bought seasoning again, this was so flavorful, a little spicy, but we all loved it!
Do you make your own taco or fajita seasoning? I would love a taco spice mixture recipe!
I’ve never made either taco or fajita seasoning on my own. I cheat and buy the packet or if I’m out I just throw a big blob of salsa in the pan to cook w/ the meat. So cool that you made your own!
ooh great idea! I always just buy the packets but this is smart and looks so tasty – thanks!
How creative! I use Penzey’s taco seasoning – it is much cheaper than the packets. Never thought of putting it together myself, though.
Thanks for sharing! I’m craving fajitas now! If there were a, “Your Blog Makes My Mouth Water” blog award, I would totally nominate you! 😉
i just checked my mail box last night and discovered the package you sent! YAY! i am so psyched and am thinking up good things to bake 🙂
Very cool, I’ve never made my own.
Awesome mix!
I never buy store bought taco or fajita seasoning either. #1 I don’t like the taste and #2 it is FULL of sodium.
Instead I usually just blend up our favorite salsa and toss the meat in that…everything is already in the salsa!
This is great, And so much more healthy. I used minced onion and garlic cause I didn’t have the powder, and wow! All I can say is thanks, It was a big hit….:)
I have made my own taco seasoning several times. It is so quick and easy, and I always have the ingredients in my pantry anyway! Here is the one that I use:
Homemade Taco Seasoning:
1 Tbsp. chili powder
2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. ground cumin
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. paprika
1 tsp. powdered oregano
1 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix all ingredients together. Makes 3 Tbsp. of seasoning, equal to a standard 1/4 oz. package of commercial mix.
Enjoy! Thanks for sharing your fajita recipe!! It was delicious! 🙂
I had a bunch of Thanksgiving turkey leftover. I tried your seasoning reducing the salt and used a bit of broth instead of boullion (mom is on a low salt diet). It was GREAT!! I had some friends try it and now they are hooked! I also added mushrooms and spinach. My sauce was low fat sour cream mixed with salsa! Thanks for the great recipe 😎
I cannot have garlic so I make my own chili powder and taco seasoning and the flavor is so much better than the store bought packages. I will never go back to buying premixed seasonings again.
