Weekends are usually crazy busy around our house. Chores, sleep-overs, shopping, getting ready for the week, going to the pool, etc…
Yesterday was a gorgeous day in the Chicago-land area. It was hot, so we decided to go to our local pool for several hours. We were rewarded with some of the planes from the Air and Water show going right over the pool, so it was really cool!
After getting back from the pool, we headed two blocks down from our house to a Street Fest. 5 blocks were closed off and there were different vendors selling all sorts of things from t-shirts, homemade candles, hand made jewelry. Plus there were 3 different stages set up with live bands.
This band was called the Iguana’s based our of New Orleans. They were really good and my son Mark actually danced in public with me!
It was approaching dinner time, and the thought of going back home and figuring out what to make or possibly a trip to the grocery store was not sounding too fun, so we decided to eat at a restaurant called Wishbone. They feature New Orleans style food (but have a kids menu with chicken tenders and burgers!)
The best part was it was air conditioned inside and we still had a great view of the band!
My son Mark loves ribs, so he and I split the rib dinner and we still had leftovers!
Also, they bring out these awesome corn bread!
And, of course to celebrate the evening, my hubby and I enjoyed this beer:
After dinner, we went back outside and enjoyed more of the music!
My daughter ran into her friend (also named Claire!) (My Claire is on the right!)
And, I got them all ice creams (and didn’t have any myself!!)
We walked home at about 9:00 p.m. and we were tired! It was a super day though!!

Earlier in the day I decided to make what so many bloggers refer to as “The Green Monster” although mine turned out to be more like a purple monster. Basically its making a smoothie with spinach and maybe protein powder, fruits etc..
I was always afraid to try it because I thought it would taste gross, but I decided to go for it and I am glad I did!! I LOVED it!
In my smoothie:
1 cup orange juice
2 cups baby spinach
1/2 cup of blackberries
2 tsp. chia seeds
1 cup strawberries
Mix it altogether in a blender until smooth. This made a lot and its only 4 points per serving and I think a great way to start the day.
AND, I went jogging/brisk walking for 45 minutes.
I hope everyone had a great weekend!!
Sounds like it was a fun day! Your green monster looks pretty – did the chia seeds gel up in it?
*******
Shelley, the seeds didn’t gel up. I think because I made it and drank it right away, it didn’t have time to gel.
Other recipes recommend letting it sit in liquid for 10-20 minutes. I didn’t even taste that they were there!
wow! the pool, a street festival, AND a fun dinner out?!?! that really does sound like the perfect summer day. glad you had so much fun!!!!
Sounds like what weekends should be! The smoothie thing sounded… um… interesting. π
