I would say about 99% of the time, I DO NOT buy meat with the bones in it. I just don’t like cooking with them, or picking the meat off, etc….
BUT, my sister kept on telling me how much cheaper it is to buy bone in chicken for example instead of boneless, skinless, chicken breasts. Looking at the grocery store flyer this past weekend, I noticed my local store had buy one get one free on all their meats. So, I circled whole chicken, and was going to get one.
It was only $4.65 for the whole chicken and I got one free, so that’s a great deal!! My sister got us a digital thermometer for cooking meat for Christmas, so I won’t ever have to worry if I am overcooking it.
The verdict? YUM! (although I made my husband carve it!) It turned out great, and I have enough meat leftover to make soup! I’m going to try to make different things now cooking with meat WITH bones and see what happens!
I just added sliced potatoes and carrots and onion to the roasting pan and that was it!
Does anyone else have a cooking fear like that?
Yep, it’s the only way to cook/shop. Good for you.
I definitely have a cooking fear like this – I hate buying meat with the bones in! carving it just grosses me out – especially chicken =(
Completely – I could never hack up a whole chicken to cook they way they show on TV. I buy parts, but commend you for facing your fear and buying the whole chicken, which, btw, looks great roasted!
I totally used to have this same fear! Only in the past year have I started to get over it. Getting my digital meat thermometer was a real turning point. I hated cutting into meat to check if it’s done – especially when it has bones. I’m so in love with making bone-in turkey breasts and chickens now! Good luck with your soup!!! π
I’m nervous about meats, too! I’m always afraid I’ll cook it wrong or overcook it. A few months ago was the first time I cooked a whole chicken, too! I kept paying $5.99 for the rotisseirre ones at the store, but like you was able to get 2 whole ones for about $5 – so way more cheaper!
Yours looks awesome!!! Way to go! I love the sliced potatoes in there, too – they look so pretty!
and you make stock from the bones. You can save another $5 by doing that
Hi There!
I’m a little blog follower of yours ;)!! I just wanted to tell you that I LOVE your blog!
My cooking fear is the same as yours! You’ve motivated me to attempt cooking meat with the bone in it…hopefully I will be as successful as you were!
Thanks!
Brittany
I hardly every buy things with bones either… But your chicken looks amazing, and your sister is definitely right!
Haha, I don’t ever buy meat with bones either … I should try take your sister’s advice as well!
Wow, I thought everyone ate their chicken that way. Good for you on trying something out of your comfort zone! The bird looks delicious!
Wow, meat on the bone is the best! So much more flavor. Glad you enjoyed roasting this one.
Fun getting back to the basics! I used to buy the boneless skinless meats too and find the ones with bones are so much juicier and tastier. A little fattier but moderation is good!
I like to buy the small whole chickens (4 pounds?) which are about 3.99 at my store. The only problem I’ve had is cooking them 2 at a time (trying to save time) or cooking with too many veggies in the pot with them. Usually it can be salvaged by sticking it back in the oven though. And now that I’ve roasted several birds I’ve got it down.
My cooking fear would be baking bread. It turns out horribly for me. I suppose I should try again.
