So when I was checking my e-mails this morning, my friend Tracy knows how much I love getting recipes, so she forwarded this one to me. I actually had never heard of such a thing! How clever! This is going to be fantastic!
Then, I read the ingredients:
4 TB flour
4 TB sugar
2 TB cocoa
1 egg
3 TB milk
3 TB oil
3 TB chocolate chips (optional)
splash of vanilla
1 large microwave safe mug
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well again. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Microwave for 3 minutes (for a 1000 watt microwave)
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but will fall down a little as it cools.
Once cooled, dump it out onto a plate, or eat it from the mug!
Here is the bad thing….I added up the calories, for this 1 serving the damage is 785 calories and 47 grams of fat, and that’s not inlcuding the chocolate chips!
I still think its a cool idea, so I am going to play around with a few versions tonight and see if I can reduce the calories/fat.
I’m wondering if adding tofu in place of the oil will work? Or using less sugar, or maybe use splenda? Or using skim milk instead of whole milk??
If anyone else has any suggestions, on making this healthier, I would love to hear your ideas! Just beware if one of your friends passes this along, had I not figured out the calories, I would have thought it was maybe 250 calories! Ha!
Ok minus the calories and fat – this is such a cool and innovative idea. I too have never heard of doing that. Hope you can figure out a healthier alternative bc I’d love to try it!
Similar recipe:
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
dash salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Mix dry ingredients in mug, then add remaining. Microwave for 1 to 1-1/2 minutes. Makes 2 servings @ 288 calories per serving (per MasterCook).
It was just OK, I only made it once.
Hmm. My mom made something similar and raved about it. Wonder what was different?
How cool! I would never, ever think of anything like this!
Hm, that sounds cool!
Emma makes this all the time with all sorts of variations–it’s on my site, too!
Great idea!! You can always experiment with healthier things like whole wheat flavour and no-cal sweetener BUT even what is listed above doesn’t sound incredibly unhealthy
I am so glad you’re trying to make it healthier hahaha but it looks like a fun treat. to have rarely. as in once a year. for dinner. haha 🙂
I have seen this all over but had NO idea it was that pricey in calories. Whoa would have to share with entire family!
I was all gung-ho about this quickie recipe… until I saw that number. Scary. Oh well, I’ll just ignore it for now and enjoy this 5-minute creation! Thank you!
oh yes, and maybe, use splenda instead of sugar, use an egg white instead of an egg, and skim milk? and maybe yogurt or applesauce instead of oil?
If you close your eyes when you eat the calories do not count.
i make my own version of 5 minute mug cake…no pudge brownie mug cake! you can do the exact same thing with 2 tbsp no pudge brownie mix and 1 tbsp greek yogurt. just mix until shiny and heat for 1 minute in the micro. so delicious and only 120 calories!
You can make this recipe with Splenda in place of sugar and applesauce in place of oil. I cook mine only 2 min 15 sec in a 1200 watt microwave. This changes alot of the calories.
